Inflight Charging Restriction

Heading off on your next adventure? Be aware—new airline rules around charging devices in-flight are now in place with several international carriers. If you regularly rely on your portable charger (power bank) to stay connected in the air, it’s time to take note.

What’s changed?

A growing number of airlines have introduced inflight restrictions on the use of portable power banks. As of April 2025, Singapore Airlines and its low-cost carrier Scoot no longer allow passengers to use power banks to charge devices mid-flight. Other major airlines including China Airlines, Thai Airways, EVA Air, Korean Air, and Asiana Airlines have implemented similar rules.

Some carriers, such as Korean Air and Asiana, now also require passengers to keep power banks at their seat—no longer stowed in overhead lockers—so they can be monitored throughout the flight.

And of course, power banks remain strictly prohibited in checked luggage.

Why the change?

These policies stem from safety concerns around lithium-ion batteries. Several global incidents involving overheating or malfunctioning power banks have prompted airlines to take extra precautions, even beyond existing international regulations.

Where do other airlines stand?

While some carriers haven’t introduced a full ban, many—including Qantas—recommend that passengers avoid using power banks onboard. Their advice echoes aviation safety guidelines: keep power banks in your carry-on and avoid use during take-off and landing.

How to stay charged in the air

With these new rules in place, a little forward planning can help you stay powered up without breaking the rules

  • Fully charge devices before boarding

  • Make use of airline USB or AC outlets where available

  • Carry the correct charging cables for the aircraft’s outlets

  • Consider travelling with a tablet instead of a laptop—it’s easier to charge inflight

  • Invest in a high-quality, certified power bank for peace of mind

As more airlines adopt similar policies, it’s a good idea to check your carrier’s rules before each flight. Your travel expert at Wanderlust Travel Experts can help ensure you’re always in the know.
